In our new section “KACHEN Tests,” we try out new concept in restaurant. On Tuesday 4th June, our journalist Marion tried out the 25 euros lunch menu at Déjà Vu, the new place to eat in Luxembourg-city center.
I’d been seeing quite a few posts on Instagram recently about a new gourmet address in the city centre, Déjà Vu, and especially their starter-main course-dessert lunch offer for just 20 euros. That’s all it took for me to try out this new place!
A hidden terrace
The restaurant is located in the 2nd part of the GrandeRue, at the end of the Centre Grand-Rue gallery (where you can find Lush shop). It was sunny on the day of my visit, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the restaurant has a lovely terrace. Once you’ve settled in, you forget all about the noise of the Grand-Rue. The smile on the face of the waiter, wearing a colourful, tropical-print apron, as he hands us the menu, convinces us that we’ve arrived in a very nice place.
A menu at … 25 euros!
As I looked at the menu, I realised that the price had gone up to 25 euros, but the list of dishes made my mouth water. For starters, a beef tartare served with ‘patacones colombianos’, for the main course, giant spinach ravioli with sautéed scampi in balsamic cream, and for a sweet finish, a grandma’s cake with mascarpone cream and strawberries. 25 euros doesn’t seem much compared to the culinary journey I’m about to embark on. Immediate boarding!
An impeccable menu from A to Z
The dishes are brought out fairly quickly by the ever-smiling waiter. The beef tartare is succulent, with just the right amount of seasoning, which goes perfectly with the fried plantain that melts in your mouth. After a short break, the main course arrived. The name didn’t lie it’s giant, home-made raviolis waiting for me! The sweet-tasting scampi are as tender as you could wish for. Don’t judge me, I sauced the plate to leave no trace! I must admit that I could have done without the dessert as I had eaten so much beforehand (very generous portions), but the portion is smaller and ideal for finishing on a sweet note.
Signature cocktails
I didn’t order any cocktails, although I’d heard good things about them. They are prepared by Manu Veiga (co-associate with the chef and a 3rd member of staff), who has worked in many places in the capital. I listened with envy to the shaker moving throughout lunch, and will be back one evening to try one of his signature cocktails. When I went to pay, I discovered the interior, which was fairly small but pleasant, with colourful decor, jungle-print wallpaper and a long bar where you could sit and watch the barman at work.
Is there a feel of déjà vu? Absolutely not, as the dishes are surprisingly flavoursome, copious and very well executed. I’ll be back!
