Speciality coffee shop Intense Coffee is opening a 2nd shop in the heart of Bonnevoie. We caught up with Tiago Ferreira, one of the co-founders, to discuss this opening, two years after having launched their 1st coffee shop in Limpertsberg.
What motivated the search for a 2nd location?
Ever since we launched, our main aim has been to create a community in the neighbourhoods, to bring the café closer to the people. This 2nd opening is part of that approach.
When we started thinking about opening a 2nd shop, the idea wasn’t so much to increase figures and sales, but above all to increase our pool of employees (baristas and cooks) so that we could offer better working conditions. More staff means easier rotation, for shifts and holidays, because we’re open every day of the week. We also needed a bigger kitchen (they have 2 cooks, and will now be 4 – editor’s note) as all of our food is homemade in our tiny kitchen in Limpertsberg.
We know how difficult it can be in the Horeca industry to find staff, has this been a challenge for you?
It hasn’t been particularly difficult for us. We’ve gone from 7 to 14 employees. We followed a clear recruitment process, including trials in our café to make sure it worked for both sides. On ours, by making sure that the new employees feel part of the team, and of course that they too appreciate our vision of work. The well-being of our employees is essential and makes for a close-knit team.
Why did you choose the Bonnevoie district for this new address?
Bonnevoie was at the top of our list, although we didn’t put any pressure on ourselves. Bonnevoie is the largest district in the city, and it’s quite alternative, with a wide range of cultures, which suited us well. We also felt that there was less choice around the café in this area. I also grew up and lived in Bonnevoie throughout my childhood and teenage years!
What will this new coffee shop look like?
We’re lucky enough to have a beautiful, very large space, ideally located on the main street for better visibility, with a nice terrace too. The offer is the same as at Limpertsberg: same menu, same café and the same smiling team! Only the decoration will change, as we had to adapt to the new premises (they did everything by themselves – editors’note). The name will remain Intense Coffee, with our neon logo, just like in Limpertsberg.
The neon sign will be lit up on Sunday 23 June for the official opening at 9am!
