On Saturday, January 27 2024, Guo Cha Club will celebrate its grand opening after its initial soft-opening phase. The owners, Sasha and his wife Brandy, promise an authentic selection of Taiwanese fruit teas and bubble teas.
Guo-Cha, which means “fruit tea” in Mandarin, is traditionally drunk in Taiwan not hot but with ice and milk. “Very important: Shaken, not stirred! This creates the foam on top of the cup and evenly cools the tea,” explains Sasha, who founded the Guo Cha Club in the Ville-Haute together with his wife Brandy, a native Taiwanese. She ensures that the fruit teas here in Rue Beaumont taste just as good and fresh as in Taipei.
A Piece of Taiwan in the Heart of Luxembourg
“As far as I know, Luxembourg is the only European capital without a Taiwanese bubble tea chain,” Sasha notes. “The product is offered at various places but nowhere really authentic. That’s where we come into play!”
For the interior design, they collaborated with a design firm from Taiwan. The basement is decorated in lime green. “The counter is yellow on the inside, resembling the peeling of a lime.” The upper floor is painted in a lively pink and offers many cozy seating options. “The upper floor can be rented for events,” adds Sasha. “Our shop is meant to be a meeting place for the various communities of our capital!”
Fruit Tea for Everyone!
“Our menu is still quite concise,” says Sasha modestly. “In Taiwan, the selection is usually twice as large.” Nevertheless, there should be something for everyone – from refreshing to hot, from fruity sweet to savory. Vegan alternatives are also available for the milk teas.
The menu includes 25 drinks in five categories: Pure Tea, Guo Cha Series, Modern Classics, Cheesy Top, and exclusive Yakult-based drinks with freshly squeezed juice.
The Pure Tea Series consists of three main teas – Jasmine Green Tea, Oolong, and Black Tea, freshly brewed several times a day. The Guo Cha Series is characterized by the use of fresh fruit puree, giving the drinks a fresh and rich flavor, while the Modern Classics Series presents classic drinks like Taro, Strawberry, and Matcha in a new form. The Cheesy Top Series adds a milk cream topping to the fruit teas that tastes like Parmesan cheese. The Yakult Series is based on the popular Japanese skim milk drink and offers a caffeine-free, lower-sugar option.
Fun Fact: How did the Bubbles get into the Tea?
The “bubbles” that give bubble tea its name are tapioca pearls, also known as “boba”. They are made from cassava root starch and brown sugar. Traditionally, they are eaten as dessert in Taiwan. In 1986, a clever Taiwanese street vendor had the idea to put the pearls in fruit tea – the rest is history.
