The PlacoMusoLux association brings together a hundred or so members who are fans of the metal caps used for champagne and other bubbly wines. And it also intends to promote the capsules of Luxembourg’s crémants throughout the world!
It’s a bit confidential… but quite fascinating when you meet those who know how to talk about it. Placomusophily actually has many enthusiasts in Luxembourg.
So what exactly is it? The hobby of collecting bottle caps. They collect the capsules that are surrounded by a wire on bottles of champagne, but also other sparkling wines such as cava, prosecco, clairette or, of course, crémant.
Founded in 2009
Placomusophiles have their own association in Luxembourg. The hundred or so members of the ASBL PlacoMusoLux meet regularly, notably during the exchanges they organise several times a year at the Atert center in Bertrange. The collections mainly involve champagne metal caps. Thousands of capsules which are referenced in a catalogue: the Lambert. Carlo Hoffmann, the secretary of the association, already has a well-scribbled catalogue. When he owns a capsule, he highlights the reference in the catalogue. The goal: having an entire collection of champagne houses. Some have produced hundreds of them! This fervent fan of placomusophily for nearly twenty years was, with a few friends, at the origin of the Luxembourgish club in 2009.
Champagne with the colours of Luxembourg
In 2010, these Champagne fans began a collaboration with Maison Delporte, in Tours-sur-Marne. In Épernay, they had the first capsules printed with the logo of their club. Since then, every year, they have created a new cap in the colours of the ASBL. A red, white and blue series, Luxembourgish castles, a Gëlle Fra, and now famous cyclists from the Grand Duchy.

Crémant now has its own catalogue
This year, the club has diversified its references: it is now also on crémant, from SARL Le Vignoble, in Schwebsange, that the club has put its cyclists’ plates. An initiative that goes hand in hand with the great mission they have set themselves: to create the Lambert of Luxembourgish crémants. So the club toured the Moselle to meet the winegrowers and take pictures of each metal caps for each vintage. A huge task. “We have not yet referenced everything and we will update the book next year,” says the secretary of PlacoMusoLux, who hopes that the winemakers will think of them when producing their capsules: “We only need one metal caps! To take the photo and reference it…”. The message has been passed on!

The meetings take place at the Atert center in Bertrange.
Next exchange: 8th of March.
Grand International Exchange: Sunday 23rd of April.
